In oil paintings and pastel sketches
from life the artist’s perception of
a place connects with her
experience of a place. A direct
fresh response to seeing landscape
in the open air combines with
inspiration and memory which guide
her selection of sites and approach.
Through painterly forms, Salstrom
uses color and shape to explore
light and motion in these works
mostly of northern Illinois; and
several smaller pastel studies of
landscape in Sweden and New York.
Through figures and architecture,
the warmth of human presence
is invoked while establishing
spatial elements of scale and
geometry.
