Statement from Susan Lichtman, Juror
We were all under stay-at-home orders in April 2020 when I reviewed the slides of the applicants for the Prince Street Juried exhibition. At first the task seemed formidable – among so many strong submissions, how to choose whose work to include? I started to parse out work that spoke to me – they might have had a sense of atmosphere, geometry or painterly touch, or a narrative conveyed by compelling graphic means.
As I started to pull a few images into a folder, I immediately thought of that thorny process of creating a limited guest list for a party. Not everyone can be invited, and one hopes the guests will get along. When I pulled the first few invitees into a folder, I realized a conversation broke out. An abstraction engaged a luminous landscape and gestured to the structured still life nearby. Suddenly there was a group energy, and the developing whole was more than a sum of its parts. This pictorial celebration was getting off the ground!
As more guests entered the folder/room, more connections were established, and there was a joyful mingling. I see that the company is diverse, but there are affinities and interesting dialogs. My job as ad-hoc hostess is done. We threw a terrific party and can sit down now and – in this time of social distance – take pleasure in the company.
