Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present recent work by Arthur Kvarnstrom and Randy Klinger.
Arthur Kvarnstrom:
Google defines haiku “as a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world.” Kvarnstrom finds that some characteristics of haiku can translate to those same elements in the language of paint; basic design elements of color, space, shape, rhythm and form replace words as a means of expression and communication. Brevity of form while maximizing each element to its fullest possibility along with references to the natural world are important similarities.
Kvarnstrom’s objective is to communicate the feelings and emotions that arise when confronted by the natural world. Keeping shapes simple and color clear are vital. For Kvarnstrom, it is essential that everything in a painting serves to communicate this central theme. Limiting detail allows the viewer to bring their own thoughts and feelings to the painting. Drawing on their experiences, while filling in details, invites the viewer to become part of the creating process.
Randy Klinger (new gallery artist):
Originally from New York, Randy Klinger set up and directed Moray Art Centre, Findhorn, Scotland in 2007 and taught there until 2018. His mentors have included the Art Historians Ernst Gombrich and Dore Ashton.
Following Gombrich’s thesis that the viewer’s mind will “complete” an image, Klinger has eliminated “natural color” by switching from oil paint to pencil, realizing he could create more evocative “color palettes” by working in greys. As a synesthetic himself, Klinger has taught hundreds of students to apprehend their own ability to see color where there is none.
Randy Klinger’s aim is beauty, sought through two strands of his work:
- Self-portraits: He reflects upon what he finds dislikeable about his own body and finds beauty through its depiction, using extensive surface pattern.
- “Vermeer”-inspired genre scenes: Does a woman alone in a domestic interior find the same response from a 21st century audience?
