Prince Street Gallery presents “Arthur Levine / Pirate Treasure” At age 94, Arthur Levine is having his 7th one-person show at the Prince Street Gallery. Levine is a modernist, but he uses representational objects to push the boundaries of artistic ideas that have obsessed him for seven decades. In this show, Levine continues a lifelong exploration of space and light using some of his favorite subject matter, including planes, ships, bridges; and for the first time, a figurative scene.
Levine is described by Phil Allen in the accompanying catalogue as βan artist who loves paint and orchestrates it the way a composer might music. His disregard for the polished untroubled surface school of picture making is evident. He is a reverse excavator, piling on until he finds the nugget rather than digging a hole.β
