After moving with her husband to Cape Town in 1967 the colors and sensuality of the African landscape were a revelation. The intensity of her reaction was confirmed after reading Kandinksy’s “Concerning the Spiritual in Art” in which he equates color with emotions. This gave her the freedom to boldly use color in landscapes and in portraiture.
Her friends and family find themselves in nearly all of her paintings. They are playing lawn bowls in Summer in Central Park, swimming in an indoor pool in Pleasures, the Pool and resting in a tent in Blue Hole, Dahab.
The Allan Center at Northwestern University includes some of Barbara’s paintings in its permanent collection. Other paintings are in private collections in Chicago, New Orleans, New York and Paris.
She currently lives and works in New York City.
