About the Artist

After 50 years of representational oil painting, Ellen’s practice is evolving to include collage and textile art.  Shifting from realism to abstraction was influenced by Nancy Crow, one of the leading figures of the contemporary quilt movement in America. Images begin with fishing vessels, tugs and sailboat components.  Paint is used to create representational images which are abstracted in painted paper collage. These are refined and enlarged then the final work is constructed in fabric. Thread and stitching add another graphic layer. The end result is a transition from craft to a genre of fine art.

Born in Brooklyn with initial training at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in her teens, she has evolved and honed her skills over many years while continuing to live and work in New York City. She received a Bachelor of Science at CUNY in 1977, followed by a Master of Fine Arts, Brooklyn College in 1981. She was formerly an art educator with the NYC Department of Education, and an Adjunct Professor at Queens College. She was formerly an art educator with the NYC Department of Education, and an Adjunct Professor at Queens College.

Since 1982, she has held numerous solo exhibitions with Prince Street Gallery, First Street Gallery, the Adler Gallery, Great Neck Library, Textile Study Group, Arsenal, and the Knox Gallery in Massachusetts.  Group exhibitions include the Prince Street Gallery, First Street Gallery, Albright Know Museum, Monmouth Museum, Woodstock Artists Association, Chappaqua, and Ossam Gallery to name a few.

The Prince Street Gallery currently represents her work.
