Bio

Tim Saternow is a nationally recognized American landscape painter whose work is greatly informed by his previous career as a scenic and lighting designer in theater and film. He says he had the perfect education to become a painter – he didn’t go to art school. Instead, Saternow became a theater designer where light is the revealing medium.

Saternow is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, The Philadelphia Water Color Society, Allied Artists of America, and the National Watercolor Society. His paintings have been shown widely including the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, VT; Museo di Fabriano, Italy; The International Art Salon Exhibition, Qingdao, China; and in New York City at the Salmagundi Club; the Art Students League; George Billis Gallery (NY and LA); and the William Scott Gallery, Provincetown, MA; among others.

Saternow’s painting awards range from gold, silver and bronze medals in watercolor, to an Emmy Award nomination for excellence in art direction for television. His paintings and writings have appeared in numerous publications including Artist Magazine, Watercolor Artist (Burning Questions), The Art of Watercolour Magazine, Naintré, France; American Artist Water Color Magazine; the books Art Journey America, and Splash 12, 13, 18, 20 & 22: The Best of Watercolor.

Saternow teaches painting at the Art Students League, NY, and formerly at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, FIT, and at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. He has also taught numerous workshops in painting, drawing, composition, and perspective classes throughout the country.

Saternow received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama, Yale University, and his BFA from SUNY Purchase, NY, and studied painting with Paul Ching-Bor at the Art Students League, New York. He is formerly a Board Member of The American Watercolor Society and a Fellow with The Clark Hulings Foundation, Art-Business Accelerator Program.

Tim Saternow is currently represented by the William Scott Gallery, Provincetown, MA, and a member of the Prince Street Gallery, NYC.
