Bio
Yookan Westfield was born in Nanao-City, Japan and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a BFA from Kanazawa Art University and an MFA from Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She graduated from the New York Studio School, 2007. Westfield received the Dokuritsu Prize in Dokuritsu Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japan in 1997 and 1998. She has held six solo shows at the Ginza Surugadai Gallery, Tokyo since 1984..

Statement
Yookan Westfield loves cats. She has two cats, one named Orange, big tomcat and the other one named Grey beautiful female and both are 3 years of age represent the vigor of emerging lives. In the other hand, the portrait of her family depicting a fading life of aged people shimmering in the air represents the glorious power of her ancestors. The contrast of her subject, young and old, human and animal and a difference of descriptive techniques are amazing.
