Prince Street Gallery is pleased to announce the joint exhibit of Flavia Bacarella and Katharine Cosenza Butler, from February 28th through March 25th. The two artists share much in common in their artistic practice. The natural world offers both women inspiration and motif. This can readily be seen in Bacarella’s paintings and in Cosenza Butler’s prints.
Flower and Field represents Bacarella’s return to painting during the relative isolation brought on by the pandemic. Many of her paintings depict the organic farm on which she lives in the Hudson Valley. Some of her works are descriptive; others stem in part from memory and imagination, and a delight in the beauty of color and place.
Flavia Bacarella studied at the New York Studio School and holds an MFA from Brooklyn College. She taught art at Lehman College in the Bronx for twenty-one years, serving as Chair of the Art Department in the last five years.
Katharine Cosenza Butler’s life-long concerns for the environment are apparent in her new work in Elements. Her etchings focus on the spiritual beauty that nature provides us. Believing that we all have an opportunity and responsibility to bring health and healing to our planet, her chosen voice is through her art.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a BA in English Literature, Cosenza Butler went on to earn a BFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. As part of her ongoing commitment to the arts and the environment, she serves on boards both in the art world and environmental non-profits.
