FRACTURE, a Prince Street Gallery Artists Exhibition
Tuesday, February 27 – Saturday, March 23
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 29thfrom 6 – 8pm.
The theme of FRACTURE was selected by gallery artist curators Flavia Bacarella
and Gina Werfel. Participating artists found visual metaphors to express a
breaking apart or disconnected condition, ranging from the personal, to reflections
on nature, on art, and on the fractured state of the United States and the world
at large. Artists were asked to write a short statement about how their work suggests
this theme. (found in the caption information underneath the images.)
Exhibition Artwork
"Artist, mother, wife, lover, daughter, sister, caregiver. Wondering how to be all of these, and if, indeed, there is ever one self, one single woman."
"Feelings of fissure and incomplete thoughts trigger emotions. Shifts in perspective lead to explorations of identity and profound change. Fracture is around and within us. So is our ability to heal."
"The layers of paint unraveling on the canvas surface present a compelling composition broken down into sections or fractures. "
" In this piece we see the beginnings of the fracturing of the old, as Nature works slowly but surely to reclaim balance."
"The clouds were these husky mountainous clusters cleaved diagonally. The longer I paint, the more mutable essences become; objects melt into strokes of color and soft elements, e.g., a cloud or smoke become more durably structural. “
"A fracture can be violent or subtle. Either can disrupt communication, create chaos or a lack of continuity. This disconnect can be apparent in our visual world, political world and social interactions."
"Certain starfish regenerate a new body from just one arm if they retain their central disk. Once the central core is fractured, the starfish falls apart. The fracture of structure is this painting's motif."
"In Averill Park, muted colors and shapes are 'below' the surface, the sharper more vibrant shapes are quietly fracturing the surface."
"My aim is to create a presence and palpable illusionistic form. Rather than depicting the figure in a naturalistic approach, I offer a fractured view of the figure, so that the viewer can imagine what cannot be seen directly, and hopefully discover a figure even more real and tangible."
"I feel it is the artist’s job to fracture established rules. This is, to me, the path to creativity."
"Most events don't immediately impact our lives. But with enough fractures they can and the world becomes dark and bleak."
"The mysterious, infinite space of a forest is seen and felt as light fractures colors and forms of tangled leaves and branches."
"Shattering an unsatisfactory fired glass piece, I set up an abstract composition of multiple colored glass shards which when refired became this abstraction of the Reykjavik, Iceland volcanic eruption. My act of destruction did fracture the initial piece and with the kiln’s intense heat, the fractures flowed together as in a volcanic eruption."
"During the pandemic, walking in deserted Manhattan streets, I was drawn to torn, distressed surfaces that once were pristine. I saw a new way to do collage photographically, moving and subtracting elements digitally vs. more traditional analog ways."
"Over time, even the strongest of things can come apart. Rock can fracture when stress exceeds the rock strength. A metaphor for our moment."
"This work is about using line, color and paint to try to make something whole during a fractured time. My initial inspiration was walking through gorges in Crete, which were created by Earth’s fracturing over millions of years".
"Fear, Greed, selfishness are forces that fracture society. Is it the role of artists to mirror society as it is, or find a better way. Can our work lead us to optimism?"
