In an exhibition of new works on view at Prince Street Gallery, Gina Werfel brings fresh attention to fundamental experiences of light and space that have informed her work over two decades of bicoastal painting. Currently in transition from California to New York City and the Hudson Valley, Werfel links Asian influences – landscape and calligraphy – to the Western tradition, especially to Baroque figure painting. She integrates them within an overall practice of lyrical mark-making, with stencils and collage, informed by dance and indebted to Joan Mitchell and Willem de Kooning. She sustains a dialogue between intimate gestures and expansive structures, often in the same painting.
