The Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present “Sunsets, et cetera,” its first exhibition of small acrylic paintings by Harvey Gordon, an experienced artist with ten previous solo shows in Manhattan.
Harvey Gordon was born in Flint, Michigan. He lives and works in Glen Arbor, Michigan, a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. This location provides him easy and convenient access to views of sunsets over the lake, over the Manitou Islands, and over Sleeping Bear Dunes. A plurality of paintings in this exhibition represents that pleasant, inspiring experience around Glen Arbor and elsewhere. Other paintings derive from additional facets of his life.
Gordon’s paintings are textured by the systematic, deliberate, complex, and mostly transparent application of layers, or glazes, of the acrylic medium. He states that his paintings are as small as they are because they are only as big as they need to be. Their modest, intimate size draws viewers close and introduces them to the intriguing paint surface. As he ages and his paintings tend to contract and simplify, Gordon addresses the question, “In painting, how little can one do and still consider oneself a serious artist?” In seeking the answer, he allows it to reveal itself in his paintings.
Harvey Gordon studied art at the University of Michigan, the Cranbrook Art Academy (BFA), and the University of North Carolina (MFA). He taught studio art and art appreciation at UNC, the University of Maryland, the Kalamazoo (MI) Institute of Art, and Glen Oaks Community College in Michigan, where he headed the Art Department. His writing on art and culture has appeared in Arts Magazine (essay), American Artist (with paintings), The Artist Magazine (with paintings), The New Art Examiner (reviews), Modern Age (essay), the Kalamazoo Gazette (reviews), and the correspondence sections of The New Yorker, Commentary, the New York Observer, the New Republic, the Weekly Standard, and The New Criterion. Selected solo exhibitions: Tibor de Nagy, Hirschl & Adler (2), Fischbach (3) Katharina Rich Perlow, Franklin Riehlman, George Billis, and The Painting Center. Seven in Michigan museums (Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Saginaw, Battle Creek, Alpena).
