Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present Ancient Echoes, New Paintings, Watercolors and Sketches by Margaret Tsirantonakis which draws upon ancient sources and the natural world.
This solo exhibition, Tsirantonakis’ fourth at the gallery, will feature oil paintings from the Minoan Roots series (2022), smaller diptychs and garden-inspired canvases. Also included will be watercolors done plein-air on the South coast of her native Crete and during quarantine at home. In addition, a selection from her sketchbook Driving to Sougia (2019) will be on display.
Color continues to be of prime importance to Tsirantonakis’ instinctive painting process. Employing a wet layer over a dry one with rapid brushstrokes brings a depth of vibrant layers of color. She shows an affinity with both Bonnard and Joan Mitchell.
In many of these boldly colored paintings, Minoan motifs emerge in abstract and naturalistic settings. These motifs have resurfaced in her work inspired by recent visits to archaeological museums in Crete.
Margaret Tsirantonakis was born in Chania, Crete, Greece. She immigrated to the United States with her family when she was one year old, growing up in Astoria, New York. She lives and works in Stamford, CT. Her work has been exhibited in New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Taos, NM and Greece. Tsirantonakis’ work is in private collections in the United States, Europe and Japan.
