The Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present the work of Nancy Grilikhes in an exhibition titled SWERVE.
The title of the show, “Swerve,” describes an abrupt change in the expressive language Grilikhes uses. The shift in her mode of expression was brought about by recent traumatic occurrences in her life. Her figurative work has always been a thoughtful exploration of geometry, nature, and space through portraits, still life, and landscapes. But the sudden death of her husband, occurring simultaneously with her own diagnosis of cancer, brought forth a response from deep within her psyche. The oil pastels, which contain seemingly disconnected near-abstract references to the visual everyday world, express loss and recognition of the illusion of control over one’s life while adhering to a strong artistic language.
The title Swerve is inspired by Stephen Greenblatt’s book The Swerve. Although the swerve, in that case, refers to a phenomenon related to physics, it describes one ancient Greek philosopher’s leap of thought. Grilikhes experienced a leap in her practice when she began making art again. For the first time, she felt no conscious control over what she was making; it came from another place, and it was not an intellectual event.
