Maren Brown is an award-winning painter whose abstract work in egg tempera and acrylic has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries. She joined Prince Street Gallery in 2026.
Brown has painted in egg tempera for more than 30 years, often combining it with gold leaf in ways that reference—but also reimagine—the sacred tradition of icon painting. Her egg tempera paintings are built through multiple layers of detailed brushwork and crosshatching that create a sense of depth and luminosity. Her acrylic paintings are informed by her work in egg tempera but incorporate a more spontaneous and gestural use of paint not possible with egg tempera.
Her work has appeared in exhibitions at museums and galleries including the Hill-Stead Museum, the New Bedford Art Museum, Galatea Fine Art, and the Attleboro Arts Museum. She has been selected for juried exhibitions by curators Carmen Hermo (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Alison Rudnick (Metropolitan Museum of Art), who awarded her painting Black Mountain Best in Show, and Michèle Wije (Yale University Art Gallery), among others.
She has twice been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center.
