Inspired by great masters, Diana Freedman-Shea transforms Canaletto’s figures who participate in Venetian civic life by combining them with contemporary figures. These configurations become a meditation on time and a reminder of man’s capacity to destroy a great city and the environment.
Aerial views have often figured prominently in the artist’s paintings of cities. Panoramic views of Italy have also provided an opportunity to study the effects of light and weather on a stunning, inhabited and cultivated landscape.
Covid-19 altered the artist’s access to these vistas by curtailing travel and restricting views. The artist turns to painting what is accessible; window views, interior spaces, obstructed views, and reproductions of master paintings. The results are sophisticated paintings that tell a story and explore the vocabulary of painting.
