Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present recent work by Larry Groff of 28 paintings, drawings and prints that flip the pictorial space and subject matter in novel ways. Such as seen in his celebratory Gracias a la vida painting with a James Ensor-inspired Mexican musical theme and the dystopian Will be Wild, inspired by Poussin’s Abduction of the Sabine Women that references the Jan. 6th riot. Further flipped subjects and styles are seen with his rorschached-type abstract walnut ink drawings and collages and prints of digital sculptures made on the computer, such as his digital bas-relief, that also riffs on Poussin or the digital still-life of ancient Roman Glass and antique sculpture.
Luke Lyman wrote in the New Criterion The Critic’s Notebook, October 3, 2023, “Larry Groff: Flipped,” at Prince Street Gallery, New York (October 3 through October 28)
“Form and substance are one and the same,” said the Danish artist Asger Jorn. Such harmony is more easily dreamt about than created. But in Larry Groff’s new suite of paintings, featured in “Larry Groff: Flipped” at Prince Street Gallery, playful perspectival experimentation is merged with equally playful subject matter. These are humorous, almost mischievous works, but they are also emotionally layered so as to invite intimate study. Similarly, their form makes them immediately accessible—the pastel-colored oils on linen are mouthwatering—while concealing just how complex the underlying construction and layering really is. This show is thus very fun and very serious. —LL
